Everyone has a story worth telling
“Books break the shackles of time.
A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic”
– Carl Sagan
Rack & Rune Publishing believes everyone has a story worth telling. Yet for most people, traditional publishing seems beyond their reach, and ‘vanity’ or ‘partner publishers’ can lead to huge outlays and a garage full of unsold books.
But it doesn’t need to be that way. Print on demand or ‘POD’ publishing makes it more affordable than ever to get your book published and distributed to the same global network of online bookstores used by the big traditional publishers.
We set up Rack and Rune to assist you with navigating your way through this new digital publishing realm without it costing the Earth. We can also help you take your book through traditional offset printing processes.
If you have a story you want to print as a book and get it out there, send us a message and we’ll work out a price to help you take your story to the world. Or if you’re a small publishing house looking to outsource design, we can help you too.
Novels, Academic, Reference, Memoir, Picture Books, Anthologies, Poetry & more
What We Offer
Whether you simply want mentoring, a manuscript assessment, some typesetting, illustration, cover art, or a full publishing project from start to finish, we can help you.
Rack and Rune can also provide a full ghostwriting service if you have a memoir you need to produce but don’t feel confident writing it yourself (the case study below is a fine example).
We can even look after setting you up with your own author website complete with ecommerce and the training required to look after the site’s ongoing maintenance.
Recent Case Study
In 2022, Sandy Dubs approached Rack and Rune’s Graham Davidson the day after he’d co-presented a self-publishing workshop with Debbie Lee, who at the time was fronting IngramSpark’s Australian operations.
She had initially asked Graham to mentor her as she wrote her memoir. A few months later she called him and said, “My cancer has come back and I can’t write anymore, so I need you to write it for me.”
The following two years saw Graham make half a dozen week long trips to Sandy’s Melbourne home as he conducted hundreds of hours of interviews and pieced her complex lifestory together.
Two years and 105 thousand words later, the book was edited ready for Graham to typeset and design the book, along with its unique cover. He then prepared the files to be sent off to Ginninderra Press, a small boutique hybrid publisher now based in Melbourne, thereby taking the book from its inception through to its completion. The book is available from Ginninderra Press and you can view a sample consisting of the first three chapters below.
Who are we?
Rack and Rune founder, Graham Davidson is a professional creative with over 45 years’ experience.
After a successful career in advertising, he partnered with Emily S Smith in 2017 to establish the early childhood literacy initiative, Storytime Lane. The experience of publishing Storytime Lane’s books opened Graham’s eyes to just how easily books can be published in 21st century.
Inspired by this realisation he established the IF Maitland Indie Writers Festival, a festival focused on encouraging those who have a story they’d like to share with the world to tell their story. But while it’s easier than it’s ever been to get published today using either Print on Demand (POD) technology or traditional offset printing, there are still some steps in the process that can be intimidating for those without experience in the writing process, editing or the software required to prepare a book for printing.
This desire to help everyday people who want to get their story in print is shared by all those who work with or have an association with Rack and Rune.
